Weigh-ins may be largely ceremonial for heavyweights, but the results on the scales for Brandon Moore and Stanley Wright ahead of their scheduled 10-round main event clash Friday in Verona, New York, were at least somewhat noteworthy.
Moore, at 6ft 6ins, weighed 256.8lbs while Wright – who stands 6ft even – checked in at 279.1lbs at Thursday’s weigh-in. The weight and size disparities could make for an interesting matchup at the “Hall of Fame Fight Night” staged at Turning Stone Resort Casino (and streamed on DAZN), part of the International Boxing Hall of Fame Induction Weekend.
Moore, 17-1 (10 KOs), whose only loss came to rising prospect Richard Torrez Jnr in May 2024, has won three in a row since, most recently taking a win by disqualification over Skylar Lacy in February.
Wright, 14-0 (11 KOs), had been chewing up lower-level competition before scoring a career-propelling upset win over Jeremiah Milton in January.
“I’m definitely going for the knockout,” Moore said. “I’ve seen on social media there have been a lot of people saying that he’s going to get me out of there in the second round. I’m not Jeremiah Milton. I’m not these guys he’s fought before. I’m going to take him into deep water and put him down. It’s not personal. I hope he’s coming in confident. I hope he gives me a good fight.”
In Friday’s co-main event, Franchon Crews-Dezurn will face Citlalli Ortiz in a 10-round women’s super middleweight bout. Crews-Dezurn came in at 166.4lbs at Thursday’s weigh-in, while Ortiz was a bit heavier (167.9lbs), though still under the division limit.
“I’m a top dog with an underdog mentality,” said Crews-Dezurn, 9-2 (2 KOs). “Ortiz went to the Olympics; that’s the only thing I didn’t do in my career. So having the opportunity to fight and defeat her is monumental. You’re the third Olympian I have faced, so third time is the charm. I need to get this one. Ortiz is going to have to pay for this.”
For her part, Ortiz, 4-1 (1 KO), replied to Crews-Dezurn that she will “probably be the third Olympian you lose to,” and teased her ideal career plans for the near future.
“Crews-Dezurn respects my career, but she is probably using me as a tune-up fight,” Ortiz said. “If I win this fight, maybe Claressa Shields will turn over and look at me.”
