They'll be never another Marvin Hagler. Just a gritty but talented blue collar fighter who boxed is way through a murderers row of east coast fighters to get himself champion and then go on to become a legend of the sport. No big amatuer career. no olympic medals. Nothing given to him on plate, he was just a guy who had to fight his way to the top. May he rest in peace

Ray Leonard was the reason I became a boxing fan. Loved his style, his smooth movement, his energy throwing snappy punches, his charisma. Every loss he had was like a shot to the chest. When he signed to fight Hagler out of the blue, I was a senior in high school and everyone said Hagler was going to end him. The fight was shown on a big screen back in the days of PPV in your local arena, and I could not afford the tickets. But man was I on cloud nine when Leonard won.

Years later, I saw the fight for the first time all the way through and felt Leonard won, but man could I see what everyone was talking about saying it was controversial. Later on, I saw it a second as an adult and really felt Leonard got away with one. I have seen it a few other times since, and changed my mind who won each time.

Hagler had every right to feel bitter immediately after that fight, and I get him walking away. I do think it is crazy he let it eat at him so much. All I know is he was an all time great who left everything he had in the ring every fight, win or lose. He was a champion long before he had a belt, and a winner regardless of what happened in his last fight. Just hope he was at piece with it before he passed.

          Marvin War! Haggler.
What a reign 80-87 as middleweight champ. When Haggler & Hearns boxed it stopped the world without social media. When Leonard beat Haggler it split the world without social media.
This highlights an issue with modern boxing & click bait writer's today.
If Haggler was fighting in modern times all we'd get from writers is "he's a duck" & "a weight bully" for not going up & taking on the super middles & light heavyweights. Shame on you.

Is Hagler fought today, he would get a lot of criticism for not moving up in divisions.

And he would be a 154 guy. Hagler made 160 comfortably on the fight day, not the day before.

I'm old enough to remember becoming a serious boxing fan when Hagler was cleaning out the MW division. Between Hagler and my all-time favorite SRL, I've been spoiled by bearing witness to true greatness. Beyond elite, Hagler (and SRL) were special fighters. I can't help but measure today's sad assortment of 'champions' against these two guys. Hagler looked like a badass and fought like one, because he WAS one.

GGG had very similar career, he beat everybody that was there to get beat, including Alvarez, but got robbed. People claimed GGG was a nobody while he fought top 10 ranked guys in division.

Hagler, the same as other old time fighters, is overprotected compared to modern guys.

I still don’t know how he died. All the info online su****iously tells you only how he definitely didn’t die. Safe and effective my azz.

Didn't Tommy Hearns say he died from the after effects of the jab?
