do yall throw your hook with your palms facing down or facing you? my trainer always tells me to throw it with the palms facing down in order to prevent injury, but almost everyone at my gym says throwing it the other way gives you more of a chance of making contact....
btw, i throw my hook like a bow and arrow/slingshot

short hook palm to me, long hook palm down, the hook with palm to me mostly has more force, because i can really flex my muscles so the punch comes in hard! the long hook is hard too, but mostly to open for the straight right. the short hook is better for opening for moreover the right uppercut, sometimes a right cross.

According to Mr. Dempsey its a tight compact hook the more you open your hook the more you open your self as well when its a long hook its no longer a hook at it becomes more of a swing which is just not a punch that should be in the boxers vocabulary or the long hook could be used to set up a punch but a real puncher doesn't need a setup they just punch and if your going to punch why not punch to knock them out instead of just flustering them(according to Mr. Dempsey that is) as far as the palm facing you or facing down id say walk up to a door frame and plant your hand against it like your throwing a hook into it try both ways and see which way you hand feels more stable and go with that i personally use the palm down because of the structure and what muscles are being used to keep the palm down it keeps the punch compact and all you have to do is punch where as with the palm facing me not only do i have to work on throwing the punch i also have to concentrate on keeping my fist from flying out into a swing

There is a natural rotation of the wrist when throwing any punch. In the real world you can not be sure where the palms will be facing when it connects with the target. If you throw the hook with the intentions that the palms shall be facing in any particular direction, you are doing it incorrectly.

I agreew with a lot of this. Hooks that are thrown long are indeed a different punch all together and they are called swings. That being said. Swings certainly have a place in boxing and always have. Outside boxers can use them sparingly to attack in-boxers that are slipping predictably or have a sloppy short rhythm. Swings are indeed sloppy boxing technique by definititon because of their angle of attack and terrible risk/reward values, but if used intelligently and with proper technique, they can be used successfully.
On the palm in/out question. it is entirely up to the puncher. Many pro boxers use both techniques and you typically use whichever you are most comfortable with. that being said, the palm down variation is indeed designed for targets inside the elbow range. The small amount of snap generated by the rotation of the arm by the Brachialis and radiobrachialis adds quite a bit to the technique and is a big part of the reason that this style of hook is tough to master.
With all that said though, Tyson used a palm in style...
