Every time I re-watch these shows and expect them to be outdated, I am always surprised by how relevant they still are and how they still have that edge no other TV show to date has ever remotely come close to. Today I started another re-watch of seasons 1 of the Wire and 2 of The Sopranos and felt so immersed in their worlds, something I haven't felt in ages...remember how immersed you could become in a show before the days of PC and wokeness?
I also think one of the reasons for their staying power is that these shows weren't solely plot-driven, so can't be historized as shows set in the 90s and 00s. One used the the wider landscape of Baltimore to explore the power dynamic and social decay while the other used organised crime to delve into the mind of a psychopath and held a mirror up to our own humanity -they'll never grow old because they transcended their genres.
What in your opinion are some other shows that are still watchable today?
