Comments Thread For: Flores: Mayweather Needs Real Foe To Drop Cotto-Canelo

BJ Flores, cruiserweight contender and expert analyst for NBC Sports, says Floyd Mayweather Jr. will need a very good opponent if he intends to snatch away the lucrative Cinco De Mayo date of May 2nd from the proposed showdown between Miguel Cotto and Saul "Canelo" Alvarez.

If Canelo-Cotto gets made, Flores believes Mayweather will need an opponent on the level of Manny Pacquiao. Top Rank's Bob Arum, who promotes Pacquiao, is looking to get his fighter in the ring with Mayweather next year.

Floyd is his own boss. He's the cash cow and his name alone is enough to secure May as his PPV date

I hear team Mayweather has already contacted Miguel for a proposed rematch at "middleweight". Smart move by Floyd but I hope it doesn't happen. Cotto-Canelo is a much better bout

"Smart move"? That would undeniably be the biggest duck move in boxing history. I think he'll lose all support and respect if he did that.

Like showtime gives a shhhh...Hbo has nothing to lose by putting on an event. they are pretty much guaranteed the purse they'd guarantee for cotto and canelo even if the numbers are bad. Showtime on the other hand isn't going to be happy paying $32 million and having money taken off it's plate.

Mayweather GGG might do almost as good as Cotto Canelo, but that's pure fantasy and if he would consider going that rout he may as well make a career high payday and break records and give the fans the biggest fight ever courtesy a la pacquiao y top rank promotions and bob arum

MW will lose his PPV crown if he fight a bum on the same day this fight happen. Pac is his only choice.

just making that phone call to try to secure cotto so he doesn't have to face pacquiao and keep his May date is the biggest duck move in boxing history. I have a feeling hes going to make the fight with pacquiao for may and then pull out last minute due to injury and screw over cotto canelo and pacquiao, but still he would be contractually obligated to fight him so he'd have to or pay up
