Staples Center, Los Angeles, California - Leo Santa Cruz (31-0-1, 17KOs) won a twelve round majority decision over former three division world champion Abner Mares (29-2-1, 15KOs) in a fight filled with fireworks and warefare. The scores were 117-11 for Santa Cruz, 114-114 a draw and 117-111 for Santa Cruz, who captures the vacant WBA featherweight title and the WBC Diamond belt.

Mares went right after Santa Cruz at the sound of the first bell and the two fo the were trading some heavy shots at close range. Mares was digging hard to the body and trying to stay as close to Santa Cruz as possible. Santa Cruz had the edge whenever he was able to get some distance.

I thought the fight had its moments but overall it was a let down. Mares looked blah. LSC looked average as hell no way is this kid the next big thing.

Great fight. Didnt know Leo can fight like that. I had written off after some bad performances but he boxed the hell out of dirty ass Mares.
