Granted Cotto is a HOF'r, but is he a true ATG?

Cotto is currently at 40-5 (33KO's) he may fight again but I don't think the person he fights will bring any extra kudos to his resume. So we could hypothetical discuss his standing as an ATG, we know he will be inducted into the HOF, but where does he stand in regards to the upper echelon of boxing?

Career accomplishments: 4 weight world champion (1 lineal belt), 19-5 (17KO's) with 2 stoppage losses in World title fights, making 14 successful defenses of his belts (1 at MW, 2 at JMW, 5 at WW, 6 at JWW).

Notable Wins: Post Prime Martinez, Green Malinaggi, Mosley, Post Prime Margarito, Quintana, Torres, who's meh Corley, Clottley (heard some say it was a pick em fight I thought clottley nicked it but it's been a while), Foreman AKA Bambi, Judah the rest are meh.

I personally think he's fairly overrated his resume warrants HOF status, but not ATG status. His run at MW at JMW were farce, so in turn 2 of divisional titles are meaningless if nothing was achieved after winning the belts. His run at WW and JWW were good. But is that enough to warrant ATG status?

    No

He wouldn't have been very successful at 147 in the dlh, quartey, Trinidad era.....or the 80s....or the napoles, cokes, Rodriquez era

He was good for his era. May have been a contender but 147 has the deepest crop of talent ever

See brother, I made this thread cause some cat was telling me he's an ATG on the level of floyd and DHL. He said if you think he isn't an ATG then Oscar defo isn't. I was like WTF? New boxing fans man.

IMO dlh fought in one of the vest eras ever...hard to dominate....IMO he competes in any era at 147. He only lost to two ATG at 147 and that Mosley dlh fight is 2 prime P4P guy. High speed chess

On that night they give any welter in history hell....cotton is very good but more on the Benny paret, marlon starling level of near greats

He had a run in 140,HoFer yea,ATG no.This fight with Margo broke him not only on physical level,he admited it,not openly but from what he is saying, his will to win is not on the level of determined champs its sad to say but true.

Oscar has wins over Parnell ,Hernnandez ,Leija, and Camacho,I know we are talking about WW but also about being ATG,and Cotto dont have wins like this.Oscar was robbed from his biggest wins in WW doe shame.

I dunno man, he isn't so far off the ATG status. At 140, he has to be one of the most skilled and hardest hitting guys to have an extended time at the weight. 147 is a tougher point and his 154 run is mediocre at best BUT he did win THE LINEAL middleweight title off the best middleweight since Hopkins. That says something, even if Martinez was shot and hurt.

If Cotto wasn't so easily hammered by Pacquiao or beaten by Mayweather, he'd def be an ATG but when he has lost, he has mostly looked vulnerable and honestly, kinda weak. I feel he beat Canelo and that fight robbed him of a truly iconic win. Oh well.

I don't see how Cotto can be considered an ATG.

Obvious hall of famer. Of course. The guy fought pretty much every name he could. But, he did lose to two of the true ATG of this era in Floyd and Manny. I'll leave the Margarito fight off of this for obvious reasons. Then you have very close fights with guys like Clottey, Judah, and Mosley. Close but clear wins other than Clottey which could have gone either way. So what are his biggest wins? The Margarito rematch? A shot to bits Martinez? I don't know, I guess it would be an older Sugar Shane. Then, late in his career he loses wide IMO to Canelo. I don't see the argument for ATG anywhere in there. He is/was a very good fighter, and a warrior. What boxing is all about. Fist ballot hall of famer. But no ATG.
