    First Sparring Session

So Monday I sparred for the first time... I sparred for 3 rounds total, a different person each round. Prior to joining this gym I had no boxing/fighting experience what so ever, so after a month of going to this gym I finally sparred. The first guy they put me against was just as new as I was. I was slightly larger than him (but not by much) and I did pretty well against him. But the next guy they paired me with was larger than me and according to my trainer was a "trained fighter". Anyways, this guy proceded to knock the **** outa me for 2 minutes... so pretty much I got I'm not exactly sure what "trained fighter" meant, but I'm assuming this guy has had several amatuer bouts under his belt. Then the next round they put me with a guy who's hoping to qualify for the Olympic team or something. He's smaller than me, and basicly he just worked on his defense as I tried throwing punches at him. He did land a few combinations on me, but he could have owned me completely had he wanted to.

The thing that really killed me was that I was nervous... that sapped every bit of my energy that I had. I felt like I had no speed, power, or coordination; especially against the second guy... he was completely fresh while I had already gone a round. I'm 19 and I have ever been in any kind of fight before in my life so I guess that was to be expected.

well hey everyone goes through it
the more fights you have, regardless of your opponent, the more you'll be able to control that fear and use it for your good
but hey major props for going against two experienced fighters

      Sparring after a month?

You must either be a brilliant athlete or you have an irresponsible trainer. I would never let any kid spar until he can prove he is not easy to hit. If you haven't done a course of defensive drills then I would recommend that you find a new boxing club. If you are training in a gym where everybody has a broken nose and scar tissue around their eyebrows, you can be sure that is how you will be looking in a few years. You will also notice that many of those guys are spaced out even when they are not on drugs! Good defense is how you avoid getting hurt. Boxing is a dangerous sport and even amateurs can sustain permanent injuries.

Well, I don't think that the trainers are all that irrepsonsible since 1.) they're training a guy to qualify for the Olympics and 2.) both trainers have an extensive background in boxing. Obviously we had headgear, mouth pieces, and vasoline on our faces to deter scarring. Nobody there seems "spaced out" in the slightest, or any broken noses. Even thought I completely got my ass kicked, I think I learned a thing or two from it. Not really sure what you mean by a brilliant athlete, but I'm in excellent cardio shape from playing soccer my whole life, as well as football in high school.. 6' 165lbs. @ 9% bf. But at any rate, my defense is definitely lacking.

My trainers had the exact same credentials including one being an ex pro(doesnt mean much in reality) and Im sitting here unable to concentrate on 5 months no physical activity, neurologists orders.

No one should be sparring after 1 month, I sparred after 1.5 and got owned completely. Well, I did beat the 14 year old they put in after I got the concussion for 3 rounds(after being beaten to a pulp before-didnt go down though ). This is because most of my time in the gym was spent getting in shape without building muscle memory and really properly training.

Well I found out about the "trained fighter" guy. I talked to him today and apparently he's been boxing for 14 years (he's 24) and is about to turn pro. said something about having his pro contract. He was cool though, I asked him alot of questions about his style and about sparring in general and he showed me a few things.

I then went a round with the new guy again, and I felt I did pretty good. I recently learned how to throw an upper cut and I caught him with that several times as he tried to come in close. Then I sparred the olympic-hopeful guy and I did better against him. Even though he still hit me with several punches, I was able to land a few on him.

I had to stop after 2 rounds though since I'm still recovering from a cold and I couldn't breathe through my nose very well, and not being able to get much air through my mouth piece I was struggling to breathe.
