How to get started in amateur boxing?

I have been training on my own for about 6 months, and I am looking for a good gym to start really helping me (see my other threads). Anyway, how do I get started in real amateur sanctioned boxing matches? Do I need to find a club that is affiliated with my local USA Boxing chapter? Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can go about doing this?

    Thanks

Thanks. What should I be looking for in a gym, as far as the ability to get me ready to fight, and to be able to get me good quality amateur fights? Any recommendations in the St. Louis area?

One thing you could do is find out who the top fighters are in your area(look for Golden Gloves or other tournament results) and find out what gym they go to. Not fool-proof by any means, but it's better than picking some random gym out of the phone book.

i dont know about in america, but in a gym try and get alot of space, laid back trainers who wont clamp you into 1 style, teach you what they know but also give you room to do certain things that you might think will suit your style

o what a good question im glad you threw that out there. I learned the hardway how to find a good gym! I started out in a fitness/get in shape/fitness boxing place for a few months. then i was like dude this place is only open 4 hours a week and its time to move on. I went to a gym that had decent amount of kids my age. the trainer was horrible and had a amateur record of like 12-10 and he is very rude and out of control. and now finally today I will be going to a new gym that has a ton of pros and good amateur fighters.
key things to look out for
            *relaxed trainer
            *decent fighters pro or amateur
            *couple of trainers
            *the eviroment
*do they care about there fighters
*make sure its not more than 50 a month
*make sure there atleast open 5 days a week
*go and check it out before you start a few times

I respect the attention to detail. I also dig the metaphor and comparison he's got going on.
