    second phase attack

right, recently my coach has been telling me that I cant just attack in single combinations and need to follow it up with second phases. Im familliar with what second phases are (throwing one combination, stepping off the line of attack, usually to the side, to avoid the opponents retaliation, then following up with a counter) the advantage being that 1) your opponent doesnt see it coming and 2) that he has to re adjust himself because your no longer in his line of attack and he cant effectively hit you until he does so. I just have trouble because im either out of range because I didnt judge the step when I "broke the line of attack" and cant throw a counter, or my opponent changes his line of attack quicker than i can get off of it ( which would lead me to belive that im telagraphing it but to my knowladge im making it as subtle as possible).

anyway, I was hoping for some advice on techniques and methods on how its done better.
    Thanks for any advice

Try throwing combos in odd numbers, that way on the last shot your weight should be mostly on one foot that gives you the opportunity to spring off that leg (where the weight is) to change the angle and thus setting up another phase.

I'm guessing that now you are trying to plan your second attack in advance and as a result you are making a move when the opportunity isn't there (i.e. your opponent is out of range or moves laterally etc).

You need to throw your first combo and be able to react based on what the opponent does - not what you think he is going to do. In order to react appropriately to the situation, you need multiple ways of initiating a second attack and these movements need to be second nature so you can react appropriately.

Work a variety of drills / scenarios whilst on the bag / shadow boxing (get creative). Get the movements ingrained so that they become second nature and you don't have to think about the execution at all so that when the opportunity arises you don't have to think about what you are doing - you just do it.
