    Proper technique

Is there a certain way to hit a bag, because I want to make sure I'm not killing my joints for when I get older. Also, is there any techniques that require no bag and just you, in order to build speed instead of strength? Thanks.

do you mean speed as in runin or punchin? if its runin, a good way to build speed is 10 x 30 meter bursts but if its boxin at the end of your session on the bag go for a 30 second flury or just punch the bag at a reasonable fast pace through-out the whole session then raise your speed by just a little after a few days, plus, thats what a speed bag is for - buildin speed

          most important basics imo are:

          1.
Make sure each punch comes from the guard, don't throw shots from the waist. This is something I'm bad about, my coach yelled at me for 2 ****ing hours friday cuz I kept ****ing my right hand before throwing it and throwing punches from down low because I was getting tired dropping my guard etc. Focus on keeping your hands up and throwing punches from the guard

          2. Practice turning over your 1-2 jab+straight combination. This is something even some pros fail to do but if you master it before you develop bad habits you'll do much better and hit with far more power while protecting your chin with your shoulder because you turned your shots over. To understand what this means, make a thumbs up, and throw a 1-2, but corkscrew your shots to where your thumb is facing the ground at the end of the straight punches. once you get an idea of how to do that, practice on making a fist like right before your punch hits the target and youll be hitting much harder.

focus on these 2 things, keeping your punches coming from your guard and returning to your guard, while focusing on turning your shots over and you'll be on the right path. hope i helped.

some combos to try out for a beginner would be,

straight right to the body, left hook upstairs, straight right upstairs. when you get better at this begin it after you slide to your right a little bit.

jab to the body, straight right upstairs. this combo is lethal because the straight right comes from a crouched position. Get low when you throw that jab to the body and it'll make for a big right hand upstairs

slide to your left and step into a left hook and then throw a straight right hand.

If you got long arms, and heighth, (didnt look at your dimensions yet) the main shot you should be developing is the jab.

no problem, good luck, train hard, eat right and youll be somebody someday

1 last thing. if you got long arms and want to develop a good jab with no bag, tape a sheet of writing paper to your shower curtain hanger with the curtain pushed back. jab at this thing til muscular fatigue with the goal to be to rip that paper with a jab. focus on turning the jab over and snapping it, and returning it to your guard quickly. try some power jabbing, jab is a great tool once it's mastered if your dimensions are long, like mine. trust me

I'm going to try this. I have arms like an orangutan.

Can you explain the thing about ripping the paper. How do I set it up?

If you don't have a trainer, get one. They'll be most helpful for fixing your technique.
