Defending in FIFA2010 PS3

I need some serious help. My defending in this game is horrible, to say the least.I just can't defend against through balls. My friends just keeps pressing the through button and he cuts up my defense. He plays full offense, how do I counter act this

Also when I act my players don't make the run I want them to do and sometimes the through ball doesn't go to the target

How do I get assisted through, long ball without holding triangle and pressing hard
