It does take a little bit for the game to really get going, I remember spending hours running around the map killing the same enemies over and over again in typical level grinding fashion just to get myself to the point where I could beat the first boss. Once the battle started I got hooked.

Good call on 'Xenogears' as well.

Another one I'm surprised nobody has mentioned is the 'Ogre Battle' series. Especially 'The March of the Black Queen'.

'Super Mario RPG' was also quite good.
Yea....I remember all got all the discoveries and felt so good about it. This game actually made me go out there and explore the world. Sure it has its cheesy moments but the story was great and had a good cast of characters like Vyse.

As for Xenogears.....Xenosaga came out after on the PS2. Sure it had a decent story and I loved the cut-scenes(even the long ones) but it just didn't had that magic like Xenogears did.

Loved Ogre Battle as well as SMRPG! Great Games. Wish Square would of made another sequel to SMRPG as well.

Forgot to mention Breath of Fire 3, Suikoden II & the Phantasy Star for the Genisis were awesome as well.

used to be FF series until they butchered it.

i used to love rpgs growing up. japan was on top then, shenmue, dragoon etc. not so much anymore. (dot)hack was the shyt though.

now i would say fallout. i hope they do fallout 4 clean tho. but bethesda is lazy as fook now. still using turd graphics, better steal rockstar's engine. i'm tired of obvi pixels going glitchy.

i never tried rpg's untill final fantasy 7 came out and i was in middleschool.

played it for the first time at my friend's house and begged my mom to buy me a playstation. Instead, we went to blockbuster and rented the system and game(remember those days?). When it was time to return, i hid the system under my bed and told her my friend came over and stole it. She had to pay blockbuster for it and i got grounded for a month. I would wake up at 3am and play it in the living room until right before my parents woke up.

played ff8 just enough to beat it but never played an rpg like ff7 ever since...

finally got caught with it but got to keep the system.

Was it 'Phantasy Star III' that originally retailed for like 200 bucks? One of those Genesis 'Phantasy Star' games was outrageously priced and I remember hating the fact that I couldn't buy it as a child.

Many years later I finally got to play trough it on the PS2 Sega Genesis Collection that I picked up for 5 bucks.

I logged massive hours on 'Rogue Galaxy', most of which was spent character grinding and trying to get the best insects possible in that 'insectron' mini-game or whatever it was called.

It took me forever to get my insects properly leveled through sheer determination and breeding.

Forgot which one exactly. Had a catlike chick who did a lot of damage. Think it was II. It's been a while but all I know is that I really loved it. Kinda like that one girl who rocks your world one night and you forget her name lol.

I'm going to try and play Rogue Galaxy. I can't believe I never had the chance to play it.

Another one I forgot......played Grandia? I liked the first one a lot. 2nd one on the Dreamcast was good too but it didn't have the magic to it.

                      Another one...Wild Arms....awesome RPG.

                      Ever tried Jade Empire?
