[REAL TALK] Why should we give a damn about Cuba?

Ron DeSantis just talked about giving them free internet while we have Americans without it. Is it America 1st or is that only when needing elected or reelected? The Republic of Cuba is one of the few countries following the ideology. Why not let them enjoy their "fairer society" as Koba likes to call it? We have enough inner turmoil and stuff to worry about in the U.S. We don't need to further burden our taxpayers worrying about Cuba. Enjoy that Marxist-Leninist socialism or free yourselves, sincerely a U.S. taxpayer

Not quite sure why you'd bring my name into this conversation but I'm happy to offer my 2p... as always.

I wouldn't say you should give a damn about Cuba in particular one way or another, although I think you should also just remove sanctions and let them develop as they will or as the markets allow. Maybe stop treating em like shit and let nature take it's course. My personal beliefs are that we all benefit in the long term from improving the standard of living of people in other countries but I also feel that we need to prioritise putting our own houses in order..

But again you're missing the point I think.... the people proposing this ain't suggesting it for the purpose of bettering the Cuban people but because it's a way of bringing Cuba into the US and global economic fold and eventually into the kinda tributary hold that US business interests have over the rest of the Americas. This is a strategic move to profit US corporations in the longer term as well as a huge opportunity to both surveil and propagandise the Cuban population. Can't see how it'll really profit your average American but if you got investments it might be worth keeping an eye on.

And 100% your Governement's responsibilities are - or should be - to it's own citizens (all of it's citizens) first and foremost and one measure that could be taken to improve people's chances of gaining marketable skills and productive work is ensuring as broad an access to the internet as possible... Same as I agree that training programs are a key pillar of developing impoverished US communities - and helping people to help themselves - so is internet access.
