Solid state batteries are much more of an immediate (or rather not too distant future) game changer than the Livermore 'breakthrough'. There's some very interesting work being done on sodium - sulphur batteries too which could be critical in reducing the environmental impact of mining rare earths



Not saying it ain't a significant deal but most of the stories about the Livermore Ignition success neglect to mention that whilst more energy was released than was delivered by the lasers they weren't even remotely close to matching the amount of energy that was put in to the lasers.





30 years away from meaningful mass adoption of the technology - which is the same thing they've been saying for about the last 30 or 40 years.
