Spoilers possible...Another compelling "limited series" drama delivered by hbo. Nicely adapted from some novel I assume. Top quality acting dialogue and directing you expect, including a kranston esque performance by naz's lawyer who is basically the protagonist and star imo. Some pretty obvious social commentary and contemporary leftist identity politcs of note....
The lawyer is plagued by treatment resistant foot fungus that indirectly leaves him impotent. this seems to be pretty straightforward symbolism of individual impotence in our increasingly overbearing and diseased society. anyway, he triumphs in the end when the opportunistic and calculating DA realizes she still has enough moral conscience to stop prosecuting an innocent man. Its good and thought provoking.
But the little mini agenda is pretty contradictory and ******. Every role is carefully cast in accord within the prevailing structure of identity politics. Which basically assumes sociology 101 is reality. The privledged trust fund beautiful white girl, because all white girls are beautiful and troubled promiscuous drug addicts. The Pakistani who faced prejudice and discrimination after 911. The ****** black guy who is uneducated and ridiculous at the trial, AND we find true evil incarnate at the end, some white male of course.
So if you are looking for negatives its very stereotypical and race role reinforcing, and it's conclusion and final message is naive, ...if you try against overwhelming odds, justice may prevail.
the sickness of society, pathologically selfish and spiritually bankrupt, is chronic and waiting for the powers that be to throw decent people a bone because they decide to not take the easy way and exercise their power is dumb. Dont hold your breath for simlar moments of reprieve from madam hillary or anyone IRL. thoughts from u if u watched it...?
