The pentagon is a huge building made of reinforced concrete, although it is not tall.

The twin towers, although tall, were narrow buildings and mostly empty, with steel beams inside and glass on the outside. The only super solid part was the central tunnel which had the elevator shafts, and it was almost cut off when the planes hit.

As for the free fall, the towers had to support a 20-30 story chunk on a damaged structure. When the fires kept burning and burning for over an hour (and yes it was extremely hot, enough to make many people jump) it was enough to weaken the steel, and then those 20-30 story pieces simply were taken over by gravity, and started falling down, crushing one floor at a time as if it was nothing. That�s why the collapse was almost at free fall speed, because once those huge top structures started coming down, they had barely any resistance.

My favourite bit is the part about some random finding the unscathed passport of one of the hijackers and handing it in. I like to think it was Spiderman.
