why do some fighters make a sound when they throw a punch?

aint that shiiet just more work and tiring on yourself?? lol.. wtf do they do that for?

It helps with breathing - making sure you exhale when you deliver the punch. That way breathing is regulated well and the necessary inhalation is taken care of naturally. Breathing correctly helps with power, stamina the lot.

The specific sound they make is probably just a habit formed early on.

It's pretty cringeworthy and I actually can't remember off the top of my head one great fighter who ever did it, if that tells us anything. I remember there was a lower level fight Roberto Garcia VS Antwone Smith on FNF where Garcia kept laughing at Smith for making his little puberty-azz sounding grunts and Teddy Atlas actually said it was amazing telegraphing his punches at times by yelling before he even through the punch. "Gah! Hah! Heh! Agh!"

        Its annoying

I remember when I was younger and the trainer had 4 of us shadow boxing in the ring for warm up and this dude was shadow boxing and doing that sound with his mouth and he was spitting everywhere and his breath stank bad.

Just breath man no need in added sound effects especially with horse **** breath like that.

It's to control your breathing so you don't gas out

My son are both 2nd degree blacks belts in Shōrin-ryū. In martial arts this is known as a kiai.

The physical aspects of a kiai is to teach a student proper breathing technique when executing an attack which is a common trait adopted by many other foreign martial arts and combat sports.

Students of Japanese martial arts such as aikido, karate, kendo and judo (or related arts such as taiko drumming) use kiai to startle an opponent, intimidate, express confidence, or express victory.

In kendo, for example, a point is only given by the referees if the hit is accompanied by a strong, convincing kiai.

A kiai can also be used in addition with tightening the core muscles to prevent damage to the stomach. The physical aspects of a kiai are to teach a student proper breathing technique when executing an attack which is a common trait adopted by many other foreign martial arts and combat sports.

brah... if you need to do that to help control your breathing then maybe boxing aint for you... imo, that will just make you even more tire and prolly run out of gas sooner.

                    Have you boxed before?

Try putting a mouthpiece in your mouth and box for 2 minutes while throwing punches at medium to max power.

You will gas if you don't control your breathing while you're punching
