Get one of those rat zappers.
They are great. You just put batteries in it and set it out. When it zaps one, the light turns a different color. You just pick up the zapper and dump the rat in the trash. It's very clean, easy, and humane.

Rat zappers sound cool hehe. I remember seeing a commercial for some hockey puck looking trap that mice step into where it spins around and that somehow kills them. I believe a light goes on so you know the mouse is in there or some kind of lever goes up. Not sure what kills it though, the spinning or something sharp.
What ended up working for me was a combination of things. First that bag of poison pellets. You just leave it on the ground and they chew through them. Then the old Victor snap trap. Used a Cheerio with some peanut butter on it, so when they try to pull it off, the trap gets sprung. Hopefully they die right away. When I found mine, the trap was upside down, so it must have struggled a little before it died. If you have pets, make sure they're not the type to chew your stuff or else maybe don't use the pellets. Don't wanna risk them eating the poison.
Good luck. Hope it goes better for you than it did for Beavis and Butthead.
