Couture settles score in a big way
Portland fighter retakes Ultimate Fighting title in very satisfying?fashion

Randy Couture has one little bruise on his forehead, and he remembers maybe being hit on the end of the nose.?But he was pretty much unscathed.
The same cannot be said for the other guy.
Couture recaptured the Ultimate Fighting Championship light heavyweight title Saturday night by dominating the champ, Vitor Belfort, who was a bloodied mess after being cut below his right eye. Officials stopped the fight at the end of the third round, and Couture walked out of the octagon at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas with his fourth UFC title.
He didnt get off anything,?says Couture, who made $225,000 for the win, not including a percentage of the pay-per-view. I came out and basically hunted him down and closed the distance, got him in a clinch and eventually took him down in the first round.
Same thing in the second and third.?br /> Chants of Randy! Randy!?filled the sold-out arena.
The 41-year-old Couture, who lives and trains in the Portland area, had lost the title in January, when Belfort, 26, clipped him with a left-handed punch, damaging his left eye. It was a fluke loss in less than a minute and led to the rematch, which was billed as Unfinished Business.?br /> Saturdays was not a fluke win.
Its certainly satisfying to have a match come off and get to settle it in a proper fight,?Couture says. Anytime you train that hard and go out and have a good performance, its very satisfying. But it hasnt been about the belts. Its not about winning or losing, but competing the right way and having a fair fight.
He was champion enough to step in there and put it on the line again. Hes a good kid.?br /> Couture approached the match plenty relaxed, but things got serious when he watched buddy and training partner Matt Lindland get knocked out in his match. A fighter named George Terrell knocked down Lindland with one punch in the first exchange of the fight, and then landed several more to force stoppage.
And things got interesting after Coutures win, as he invited Vanderlei Silva into the ring. The star of UFC rival sanctioning body Pride obliged, and the two shook hands. Couture has said fighting Silva would be the Super Bowl of mixed martial arts, but I dont hold out hope it will happen.?br /> Both organizations see it as if their fighter loses, they lose face,?Couture says. I dont see it like that.?br /> No, it looks like Couture could face light heavyweight contender Chuck Liddell in the spring. Couture beat Liddell for the title last year.
In the meantime, Couture will star in a reality TV show based on the lives of some mixed martial arts fighters. Hell be a trainer. Filming will be in September and October. The show will air on Spike TV.
Couture and Lindland also will put on Sportfight 5: Stadium?Saturday on the Mt. Hood Community College football field
