Sonny Liston versus Lennox Lewis who wins?

I would pick Liston to bust lewis up with that great jab.

Offhand I cannot think of Lewis having fought a heavyweight with a great jab. Ruddock HAD a great jab until he became a one armed fighter. Bruno had a decent jab... but it is true that lewis would be in deep water against a jab like Liston's one of the very best.

Lewis was not one of the great heavyweights in my opinion. He beat an old Holyfield and a washed up Tyson. He had some good wins over Ruddock, Morrison etc, but he was too inconsistent to be great. He lost to Mercer in my opinion.

Mercer was perhaps the one gift decision Lewis got. I figure every great fighter deserves one. And that is it. Fighters like Morrison, Tua, Briggs, Golota were all considered tough and very good fighters coming up. Lewis handled them all easily.

Liston. As great as Lewis was, Liston is in a different class. That's not to say Liston is invincible: I'd pick Joe Louis over him and I think Larry Holmes would outpoint him big.

Larry Holmes would have busted up Liston face more than even Young Cassius would have, had Liston not quit..

Dempsey knew (by his own admission years later) that after the seventh round in Tunney 1, he was not going to win. But he locked his jaw and went the final rounds, determined not to get knocked out.

In the end his face was busted up real bad.

Dempsey chose to take the beating, Liston chose to quit.

Mercer was perhaps the one gift decision Lewis got. I figure every great fighter deserves one. And that is it. Fighters like Morrison, Tua, Briggs, Golota were all considered tough and very good fighters coming up. Lewis handled them all easily.

I had Mercer winning 6-8 out of 10 Rounds in that fight. I don't recall Lewis, surely knowing in reality he was behind, ever really going for broke either. Odd fight from his perspective and was definitely a gift, and this was not young Lewis either, he was prime here, but, this kind of night can happen to anyone. I do think his resume is overhyped though, and sure the Vitali shot was a punch, but there is a huge element of luck when it comes to cuts, and Vitali dominated the 6 completed rounds.

Lewis vs Young Tyson, I still think, outside of being knocked out early that Lewis wins that 9/10 times, he edges Holyfield, even though I had Holyfield winning fight 2, and Bowe would have been great at one point in time, but when one guy puts a belt in the bin to avoid the fight then you can only assume one winner. Mentality is a huge part of winning a boxing fight and that move showed a lot about Bowe's feelings on if he could beat Lewis. He didn't want a bar of it. Nash out - His Majesty

Whilst Morrison, Tua, Briggs, Golota, etc, the tier behind the top guys were good opposition, I feel that the similar crop of HW's in more recent times in that tier were as good, and get called bums cause every modern boxer who isn't unbeaten is a bum nowadays. Nash out - His Majesty

Lewis never struck me as being a great fighter. He was too inconsistent. He was getting beaten by bruno until the 7th.

And they could be relatively close rounds, or not close depending on one's opinion... There is no way Lewis did not win that last round. I personaly thought Lewis won the 5th as well, and that is debatable... But the problem for Vitalie was Lewis was coming on and had started to really tag him that sixth round. Furthermore, if we assume the 5th was close, Lewis had started to do better the fifth and had given Vitalie something back. This meant that there was a clear trend: Vitalie had gotten to lewis early, Lewis was getting to Vitalie. So even if we give every positive to Vitalie... lewis was trending. Even if he lost the 5th round he did better and hurt Vitalie. Therefore the sixth round was very significant.
