In the N'drangheta war 1974-76, casualties rose to 233 in three years. Apart from the main war, local feuds erupted in various towns such as Cittanova, Seminara, Cimin?and Taurianova. Victims were sometimes fed to the pigs to make the bodies disappear.
My family is from Calabria. Organized crime still controls drugs, pimping and olive oil shipping.
The cartels have become more like ISIS than like the mob. I remember reading about them wiping out that entire Mormon family because they traveled through their turf. Bunch of cannibal tweakers.
I was reading about how different the American mafia is from the Sicilian mafia though. The American mafia had strict codes: No drugs, never target anyone's family, boss always has to green light a hit, etc. The Sicilian mafia was a bunch of monkeys bombing restaurants and shooting hunting rifles at each others houses.
First off regarding the PRESENT state of the mob in this country, specifically the Italians...my understanding, that comes from some sources I consider reliable... Is that R.I.C.O decimated them. Even Gigante, who I consider the boss of bosses for the Italians in this country, had to do some time...and many bosses over the years while R.I.C.O played out, were reduced to using public defenders.
As far as the Mexicans, they have a lot of freedom to operate in present conditions, and this gives them a lot of advantages. But when we talk about historically, and perhaps more important: the future, things are a little more interesting. First off, every outfit eventually reaches a point where they are diminished. The Mexican mob has some big guys in prison and there are smaller groups that have less of a footprint that are coming into their own, like the central american and prison gangs for example.
Historically the Sicilians were trained well. They had the best of the ***ish lords that came out of the lower east side. Because of Luciano there was a connection between the two, hence murder incorporated, a ***ish hit squad, killed many many people, many for the Italians. Most people also forget that Al Capone came out of New York City and was one of those Italian wiz kids laced up by the ***ish gangs which emerged from the lower east side.
And these hit squads became part of the Italian Mafia as well, we had roy Demayo and the Gemini LIne, killing assembly, and in my hood, where I was born and raised! The Purple Hill gang, who were a very efficient hit squad with headquarters in East Harlem, specifically the original Little Italy. These guys were at it until relatively recently...the last guy went to prison and lived in the same storefront tenement his entire life, before jail.
So the Italians had good solid footing and training and no matter what anyone says, narco terrorism, tanks, etc are not going to get you far in an American city.
The Mexican gangs, like all upcommers made a name by being ruthless. To me, any group can be ruthless. The Russians, Yardies (Jamaicans), the Asians, all manage to have such a reputation. And like all groups, there is a process of consolidating power, killing off all competition, yada yada. What made the Italians so different was the genius of Luciano. Luciano demanded that the Sicilians work with all other ethnic groups, while the idiot bosses before him refused to do so. Consequently lucky Luciano learned skills and was able to consolidate power with considerably less violence and mayhem.
The really big gang now are the gangs that stem from the prison system. Prison is a college course in how to do things right criminally! These gangs are not only ruthless, but smart, and are tougher to deal with than the former gangs.
Mexican cartels have tanks, submarines, and the firepower of a literal army.
They slaughter the Italians.
If only don corleone had taken the Sollozzo deal and pushed drugs.
That certainly sounds intimidating, but it has little scope outside their area... These instruments of Narco terrorism would not do them any good operating in A city in the United States, for example.
Certainly in Mexico it is a different story. But alot of that is also the Mexican government. for example, if the Mormons that live in Mexico were allowed, they would be happy to fight fire with fire. In reality? they would go to jail if they did so... Its truly frustrating.
Sicilians are in a different league in the underworld. They are involved in so many different areas with racqets fkin everywhere. they are on wallstreet too and white collars crimes are tougher to control.
What do the cartels do besides drug and gun running?
Italians, Yakuza, and Triads are way deeper and have more resources than Cartels.
Let me tell you something about Mexican Cartels.
They OWN Mexico, and they control the drug trade.
All the other countries whom they do business in regards to their drug supply could/would be their ally.
Theyre the most ruthless, barbaric, folks out there today.
Cartels wouldnt even think twice about smashing the **** out of some Sicilians.
Theyre effing brutal man and animalistic, and I dont like that they exist.
